The winds were blowing, kites flying, white caps on the Sea of Cortez…it is the 6th annual IKA North American Kite Foil Championships called the Lord of the Wind. It is being held right here in Los Barriles on the East Cape of the Baja.
Lord of the Wind is a week long celebration of windsports…competitors call from all over the world. They have pro, open and masters levels in freestyle, big air, kite foil racing, slalom racing and bordercross (basically a motorcross in water).
Our hometown (Helena, MT) girl, Justi, is a kiteboard instructor here in Los Barriles during the winter months and she was competing in Lord of the Wind. She did well enough last year in the open class that she had to compete in the pro class this year. She had some good runs and jumps and took 1st place in the slalom race! Rich was asking Justi if it was too windy out and she just laughed and said “there is no such thing as too much wind!”
Enjoy these photos … because of my hip surgery, I was not able to navigate as well as last year. So Rich took some of the photos and the rest are taken from my seat at the competition.
